What is expected and how can we create calm, fun home learning routines?
At Sun Hill Infant and Preschool we recognise the valuable contribution home learning has towards supporting the education of our children, whilst also wanting to ensure we find time together as families. Parental encouragement is a key factor to raising attainment and fostering a love of learning.
Home learning is focused on the regular practise of fluency within reading, spelling and maths. As our relationships and health curriculum is also a priority at Sun Hill Infant and Preschool we will always include what your child is learning about so you can talk to them about this at home. Home learning is emailed to each parent on a weekly basis.
Below is a summary of the home learning expectations for your child. As we hope you can see, our home learning is focused on what will help support the children the most. These key skills are those that we feel will support your child’s learning and progress the most, alongside what is done in school.
Sometimes your child’s class teacher might ask you to practise something different at home. They will provide you with the resources and support to do this. In this case, please prioritise what they’ve requested.

Reading
• Children should read a minimum of four times a week at home for 5 minutes to 15 minutes+ depending on the age.
• Reads to be recorded in the provided reading log.
• Reading tracker to be in school every day.
Spelling
From Reception year

• Children are provided with a short list spellings to practise at home.
• Spellings are focussed around a rule or pattern which is being taught throughout the week.
Maths
From Reception Year

• Children should practise mental maths skills little and often throughout the week.
• These skills link to the maths that us being taught throughout the week in your child’s class.
